Every morning I would lie in bed and review what I had eaten yesterday and judge myself based on how 
  “good” I had been. Then I would feel my stomach to see if it was flatter. It wasn’t. A quick hop onto the 
  scales would complete the early morning punishment for that day. I defined myself by what I weighed.
  Then during my forties, I trained to become a hypnotherapist, a career change that was inspired by a thirst 
  for understanding about human behaviour, thoughts and emotions. Part of that training involved how to 
  help clients lose weight. The program we were taught focused exclusively on habit change. While habit or 
  behaviour change using hypnotherapy is very powerful, I knew there was so much more to it than that. 
  What about all the emotions that were involved? What about healing the causes of why people overeat? 
  What about the deeply-held negative beliefs about self-image and worthiness? What about the challenges, 
  the obstacles, all the things that I knew could derail a weight-loss diet and result in a meltdown with a tub 
  of ice-cream or a packet of cookies?
  I knew I could do better. I already knew this subject would be my specialism. I set out on a path to find out 
  everything that had ever been written by professional colleagues, scientists, doctors, diet experts … either 
  as academic papers or in mainstream diet books. I also read popular books by well-known hypnotists and 
  listened to many audio tracks of weight-loss hypnosis. It was mildly disappointing to realise I had way 
  more understanding inside me than anything I read or studied during those first months. I knew I’d have 
  to design a totally new treatment process from the beginning. But first I needed some willing subjects to 
  practice on.
  Thank you to my first ever clients, including my advertising account manager at the local newspaper. She 
  took one look at the typed advert I handed her and promptly made an appointment. From those first 
  client sessions, gathering information, hearing about lifestyles, schedules, challenges, past successes and 
  failures, current weights and target weights, I began to firm up a framework for my treatment program. 
  Then I listened to people telling me their feelings, what they believed about themselves, their fears, their 
  anger, their self-blame and guilt. 
  The more I heard, the more I empathised and the more determined I was to design a program that would 
  resolve all of these concerns, from a basic procedure for reversing the habit of overeating without thinking, 
  to working on traumatic life events from the past and healing deep and toxic feelings of worthlessness. I 
  knew this would be possible because I also had experienced many of these feelings in the past but I no 
  longer felt that way. The process would need to heal, resolve and reverse pretty much everything that life 
  can throw at a person. I understood that unwanted weight can often be a symptom as well as a result. I 
  say “unwanted” because there is an important distinction to be drawn between extra pounds that are a 
  result of simple overindulgence or everyday lifestyle circumstances. That is not what we are talking about 
  here. My clients were people who wanted desperately to lose weight, improve their health and regain their 
  self-esteem but were unable to do so, despite all the effort, money, time and all the different diets they 
  had tried. I also met clients who had a super-efficient metabolism that defied all attempts to lose weight. 
  Using myself as my guinea pig and working full-time with clients, I found my own sense of peace with 
  myself. I lost unwanted weight, easily and gently. My clients changed everything about their relationship 
  with food, they discovered how easy and enjoyable it is to eat less but enjoy it more and how great it is to 
  have iron willpower. I developed an unshakeable belief that hypnotherapy, coupled with newer innovative 
  energy meridian therapies, would combine into a powerful treatment program, one that would ensure 
  success for everyone. Every year of practice brought new cases to understand, refinements to incorporate 
  and new ideas to assimilate. Every client had a unique story to tell that added to my understanding. I 
  published the results of my work and also taught fellow hypnotherapists how to follow my program with 
  their own clients.

  If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn’t have wasted thirty

  I was a plump child, a podgy teen and a young woman who 
  was deeply unsatisfied with her body image every day of her 
  life. Born into a family of sporty skinnies, I inherited my 
  paternal grandmother’s genes and body shape. I ate what 
  everyone else ate but was a distinctly different shape. I was 
  always on a diet of some kind, often a rigid starvation diet, 
  from age 13.
